Components of whey proteins and their benefits

The 5 main components of whey protein    

1 - Beta-lactoglobulin  

It is the most abundant fraction in whey protein, making up between 50 and 55% of its total composition.  It’s a source of essential amino acids including branched chain amino acids, or BCAAs, that prevent muscle breakdown. Beta-lactoglobulin is obtained from whey protein-rich foods and supports muscle building after resistance exercises.

2 - Alpha-lactalbumin  

Alpha-lactalbumin is the second most abundant component in whey protein, making up 20 to 25%. It is high in tryptophan with potential benefits that include an increase in serotonin production, sleep regulation and mood improvement under stress. It’s the main protein in human breast milk.    

3 - Glycomacropeptide  

Glycomacropeptide can constitute up to 15% depending on the purity of the whey protein. It’s a peptide formed in the process of cheesemaking. It helps to prevent dental cavities and causes a feeling of fullness that can help with weight control, among other bioactive properties.    

4 - Immunoglobulins  

Immunoglobulins provide immunity enhancing benefits to infants and others. They constitute between 10 and 15% of whey protein.  

5 - Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA)  

It represents 5 to 10% of whey protein. It’s rich in essential amino acids, reduces the absorption of cholesterol and has other bioactive properties.  

Other components of whey protein include: lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase and lysozyme, all three are found in amounts of 0.5% to 2. Lactoferrin regulates the absorption of iron and inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi. Lactoperoxidase is a natural antibacterial agent. There is evidence that lysozyme helps boost the immune system, and has strong antibacterial properties.
