Agropur Aims to Be Part of the Solution to Climate Change

Agropur recently released the 2024 edition of its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report, which highlights its sustainability initiatives both on the farm and in its operations. Among these, we find details on the SmartWay program and the installation of boiler economizers in two of our plants, which illustrate our commitment to responsible practices and desire for continuous improvement.

SmartWay Program
Last year, Agropur's transportation team in Canada reached an important milestone in sustainability.
All of the Cooperative's carriers in the country are now certified by the SmartWay program, which helps companies optimize fuel expenses and minimize environmental impact. Our U.S. operations have been participating for several years.
Thanks to this program, we can select more efficient freight carriers and transportation modes, identify inefficiencies, reduce costs, and implement improvements to decrease our greenhouse gas emissions.

Boiler Economizers
In 2024, our plants in Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil and Granby installed boiler economizers.
These devices, used in industrial boilers, improve energy efficiency by capturing the heat from exhaust gases to preheat incoming feedwater. This reduces the amount of energy needed to reach the required steam temperature.
Thanks to these economizers, each plant has already achieved substantial cost savings and reduced their total energy consumption by more than 5%.
